Ukhrul, June 18 2015 :
Tangkhul Kharar Long (TKL), a senior citizens'; association of Ukhrul district, has urged the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to look into the needs of the elderly people of hill districts of the North East by formulating a policy on care package for them, according to a memorandum of the elders' body.
The memorandum recently was submitted to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul Hrisheekesh Modak in connection with the World Elders Abuse Awareness Day observance.
While acknowledging the Government's concern for the elderly through specific programs like IPOP, NPHCE, IGNOAPS et al, the body pointed out that all such schemes are yet to cover Ukhrul district except IGNOAPS and MOAP which provide Rs.200 and Rs.100 per month respectively.
Even so this meager amount is disbursed irregularly and many elders still remain deprived, it said while urging that disbursement of pension be streamlined along with an increment of the amount.
It further urged the Union Government to establish Heritage Centre at all levels of district, subdivision, block headquarters and village where population exceeds 3000 in line with the old age home.
It also urges for provision of health care package for the elderly of the district.
At the same time, TKL has also requested Ukhrul DC for allocation of plot for setting up of a Heritage Centre at Ukhrul district headquarters.
