DESAM leaders remanded to 5-day police custody

Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has condemned the Manipur Police on Thursday for arresting 16 members including its president over the St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou stalemate.
The DESAM members were arrested by the police on Wednesday on the charge of thrashing a Computer teacher of St Joseph's School, Sangaiprou.
The students' body has alleged that a Class 6 student of the school was beaten up by the teacher who overreacted against him over a pity matter.
DESAM has claimed that it was edifying the teacher after the parents of the student lodged a complaint with it over the incident.

The arrested 16 members of the student body were produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West which remanded them to five-day police custody.
They have been charged under IPC section 341/342/326/506/34. A number of DESAM volunteers were present inside the court complex.
They shouted slogans against the detention of their colleagues.
They demanded all the members should be released and arrest the Computer Teacher Gurumayum Rupachandra who is the culprit instead.
Meanwhile, DESAM in a statement has demanded the Manipur Government that the 16 volunteers including its president M Angamba should be released within 24 hours and warned that it is all prepared to take on it if the demand is not met within the deadline.
It condemned the arrest of the leaders and taking up a suo motu case against him.
The statement said they were pulled up by the police around 5:30 pm on Wednesday.
DESAM also demanded that the teacher who is the real perpetrator should be sacked and arrested and punished.
"We've taken a firm decision to stand and fight together against violation of RTE and the challenge against the student community," it pledged.
DESAM said alert has been sounded at all units of the alliance in the wake of the arrest of its members and added all members have been asked to follow instruction from the alliance head office.
