Imphal, June 18 2015 :
Flood Control Division (FCD) of the IFCD is planning to take up a long term policy to tackle frequent flood woes in the State.
Disclosing this to Hueiyen Lanpao, Superintending Engineer (SE) of the FCD I further informed that a new programme "Accelerated Irrigation benefited Programme" (AIBP) will be initiated to that end.
In the absence of such a long term programme incidents of flash flood will be increased in Manipur, the official who did not want to be named said.
The official said floods occur due to massive deforestation, shallowness of river beds, lack of proper drainage system and increased population.
He said bed of Loktak Lake has also become shallow hampering normal discharge of water from rivers into it.
Such phenomenon had caused frequent waterlogging and flash floods in many parts of the State, he added.
To counter this problem a long term policy is highly needed, the official added.
The SE stated that the water flow from Kangpokpi in Senapati used to take eight hours to reach Imphal, but now it takes five hours and cited cutting down of trees in large scale as the main factor of this rise in water gush.
He also appealed to the people to maintain proper drainage system in all localities to stop throwing of trash into rivers to avoid and flash floods and waterlogging.
