Imphal, September 15, 2010:
The 5th foundation anniversary of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) was celebrated at the Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok today with participants offering floral tributes to the departed AMBA member one of the highlights.
While Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Y Erabot Singh and AMBA president S Brajabihari Singh graced the event as the chief guest and functional president, Uripok Assembly Constituency MLA L Nandakumar, retired Chief Justices of Gauhati high Court Justices RK Manisana Singh and H Kamini Kumar, and former AMBA president Ch Nodiachand Singh also attended the celebration as the guests of honour.
Accepting that law and order situation in Manipur at present is in disarray and noting involvement of security personnel in criminal activities including extra-judicial killing, kidnapping and extortion, minister Erabot expressed that such malaises could be controlled to some degree if the common people understand that there are laws to protect their rights.
He also claimed that inspite of intimations to authorities of department concerned for preventing sale of petrol/diesel in residential areas there is hardly any sign of effectively dealing with the menace.
The Minister cited the recent blaze triggered by illegal stocking of transport fuel (petrol) inside the 2nd Manipur Rifles complex as an example of utter failure by the law enforcing agencies.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Nandakumar pointed out rapid development in both number and quality of legal practitioners and expressed confidence that there would be no inordinate delays in delivering justice.
Accessing information through the internet is another boost for the legal practitioners, he added.
Delivering the presidential note, S Brajabihari said AMBA members have increased to about 1700 in the State.
Stressing on strict adherence to discipline and coordination among the junior and senior members, the AMBA president also called upon the members to ensure cordiality between the Bar and the bench.
