Moreh, September 15, 2010:
The 72-hour bandh being called along the Imphal-Moreh stretch of National Highway 39 since 6 pm yesterday remains by and large peaceful so far.
The bandh has been called jointly by All Manipur Students' Union, Chandel District Committee, Moreh and Kuki Students' Organisation, Moreh Block in protest against the failure of the Education Minister to keep his words of sending a Principal in-charge to Moreh Government Higher Secondary School.
On the second day of the bandh today, students of the school came out to the street and blocked traffic along National-Highway 39. In connection with imposition of bandh, president of Kuki Students' Organisation, Moreh Block Sheithong Haokip and president of All Manipur Student Union, Chandel District Committee, Moreh Manju Meitei said that they have been constrained to take up this step despite the difficulties likely to be caused to the people as the Education Minister has not kept his promise of sending a Principal/Principal in-charge to Moreh Government Higher Secondary School within a week's time.
The Minister had given his words in the presence of members of AMSU headquarters office on August 23 and if the assurance is not implemented before the end of the ongoing bandh, AMSU and KSO would be forced to launch more intense agitation with the support of other organisations all over the State.
In the existing situation where the Government schools do not have the required basic infrastructure and teaching staff, how can the parents think of sending their children to such schools for education, the two student leaders questioned.
Failure of the Government to look after the basic requirements of the only Government school in the border town of Moreh where many communities have settled down for ages shows that the Government does not care about the future of the students, the two student leaders contended, while demanding resignation of Education Minister from his post.
Birth anniv: In connection with observing the 102nd birth anniversary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Dr Annadurai, members of Sun Rise Youth Club, Moreh served drinking water to the people in the streets and market places of the border town today.
