Imphal, January 06 2013 :
Physically challenged minority Muslim sportsperson Chesam Riyaz who won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the 5th National Wheelchair Fencing Championship held at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar from December 28 to 30 was felicitated today by United Golapati Youth Organisation at Golapati.
The felicitation cum reception function was attended by Manipur State Minorities Commission Secretary Dr Md Raheijuddin Sheikh as the chief guest and advocate Md Abdul Quayum as functional president, while Md Karim, Md Abdul Malik and Md Farizuddin graced the event as the guests of honour.
The 27-year old Chesam Riyaz, son of late Abdul Helim and Amira Bibi of Minuthong Hatta had dropped out from pursuing higher education from Class X as his widowed mother, who is engaged in street vegetable vendor, could not bear the expenditure for his further studies.

He then, joined Wheelchair Fencing Academy at Pishum Haobam Marak in 2012 .
In his address, Dr Sheikh noted that the minority Muslim youths are now marching ahead in the field of education but participation in sports and culture remain negligible.
Opining that Meitei-Pangal youths have more potentiality for successful careers in sports and culture, he urged the youths to explore careers in the field of sports and cultural activities rather than indulge in wasteful activities as education, sports and culture are the only resources that could propel Manipur towards the goal of development.
Giving the presidential address, Md Quayum said that inspite of deformity in the lower limbs, Chesam Riyaz has enough muscular strength in his arms.
Given opportunity, he can even win gold medals in the Olympic Games (Paralympics) and people should encourage him for the upcoming events at the national and international levels.
Chesam Riyaz was felicitated by offering gift hampers and cash by the chief guest.
