Imphal, November 23 2013 :
In the wake of the DGP's directive to imprint Meetei Mayek script in all Police Dept signboards, the All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has reiterated its stand against the imposition of Meetei Mayek to the tribal of the State.
A statement issued by ATSUM (ES) Education Secretary, Kakam Haokip while appreciating the efforts of MEELAL in preserving the dying script of the Meetei, asserted that ATSUM should never be against the promotion of the script.
But the ATSUM would never accept any sort of imposition of the script on the tribal by amending the Manipuri Official Language Act, 1979 and the motive of publishing school text book in Meetei Mayek.
The DGP may have good reasons for issuing directive to imprint Meetei Mayek in all Police dept signboards, but he must also be aware that the 35% plus tribal population are deadly against this policy, it said while adding ATSUM would see that no vehicle or signboards with Meetei Mayek script be allow in the hills.
