Strengthening the cause of the people agitating against the custodial death of Th Manorama, All Manipur Bar Association has volunteered to assist any legal proceedings taken up in this connection.
A resolution to this effect was unanimously passed during the executive committee meeting of the Association held at its office premises with senior advocate Ch Nodiachand Singh in the chair today.
The meeting thoroughly discussed all the legal matters related to the custodial death of Thangjam Manorama Devi of Bamon Kampu who was arrested by personnel of 17 Assam Rifles from her own residence on the intervening nights of July 10 and 11.The lawyers' body while denouncing the act of the security personnel, also strongly condemned killing of the hapless woman in Custody.
Amidst reports of sporadic incidents of violence and confrontation between agitators and security personnel at different parts of the State, condemnations against the killing of Th Manorama by Assam Rifles personnel also continue to pour in from different bodies.
Khairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amadi Saktam Kanba Lup, in a statement, said that the heinous crime committed by the security personnel should not be condoned by the people.
The case of Manorama is not the first instance and the ruling SPF Government should not be under the impression that the wrath of the people can be suppressed by using force against the agitators, Lup secretary general Kh Rani Devi stated.
If the Government is really concerned about the sentiments of the people, then it should at least take up steps to pull up the two Manipuri speaking personnel who were among the Assam Rifles team which came to arrest Manorama and the two persons who signed the arrest memo, she said, while lambasting the Government for imposing an indefinite curfew to suppress the movement of the people.
Kangleipak Muslim Chanura Development Organization, Manipur while expressing its strong condemnation against the custodial killing of Manorama, demanded action against the guilty personnel.
In a lengthy statement released to the press, Organization secretary general Samshad Shahani also flayed the inability of the all political party meeting to arrived at a definite decision of lifting of Armed Forces Special Power Act under whose cover the security personnel have been perpetrating various atrocities on the people.
Namguilong Women's Society, Imphal has also strongly protested extra-judicial killing of Manorama by Assam Rifles.
It also announced its decision of extending full support to the demand for stern action against the guilty Assam Rifles personnel.
Joining in the public outcry are also women's bodies like All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organization, Khergao Khetri Chandam Leikai, Apunba Nupi Khunai Lamjing Meira Lup, Yairipok; Women's United Development Organization, Kakwa; Yaiskul Women's Association; Samaj Thoudang Nupi Kanglup, Leiphrakpam; Lainingthou Yangoiningthou Meira Paibi Nupi Lup, Kongpal; Pishumthong Ningom Leirak Meira Paibi Women's Welfare Association; Manipur College Road Nupi Marup, Chingamathak, etc.
Youth organizations like, Kongba Chanam Leikai Naharol Lamjing Club; Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Kendra Clubs' Co-ordinating Committee and Youth Guidance Club, Kongba Kshetri Leikai have also demanded action against the guilty AR personnel.
