Imphal, July 19:
FPM MLA and one of the more erudite Opposition MLAs, I Hemochandra has said that instead of resorting to such tactics as reviewing the provisions of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, the Government should get its act together and scrap the Disturbed Area tag, at least from some parts of the State, to study its impact.
Interacting with The Sangai Express today, the Young Turk of Manipur politics said, "The very fact that the AFSPA has not been able to serve its intended purpose has made it redundant.
Instead of being a solution, the imposition of the Act has become more of a problem.
The killing of Manorama was the proverbial last straw on the camel's back after all these years of alleged custodial deaths and enforced disappearance".
The MLA further said that the Government should scrap the Disturbed Area tag from some parts of the State first.
If it proves positive then the Act can be lifted from the whole State and if it proves negative then it be re-imposed, asserted the MLA.
