State Institute of Rural Development, Manipur held a one day training programme for journalists on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and its guidelines at Manipur Press Club today.
Delivering the keynote address of the training programme, AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai said the MGNREG Act, passed by Parliament in 2005, is a Government's job guarantee plan.
It is designed to provide job for at least 100 days to rural households in a year.
The training programme, Shamjai added, aims to educate the State journalists about the Act and its guidelines so that they can accurately communicate about the Act to the people.
SIRD lecturer Dr A Somarendro Singh, during his speech said MGNREGA has been able to provide jobs to a number of rural households.
The Centre provides jobs to an average of 5 crore rural households every year under the Act.
MGNREGA guarantees job for at least 100 days in a year.
Rural citizens (aged between 18 to 60) are entitled to unemployment allowance in case he/she is deprived of work for 15 days, Somarendro informed.
