Phungyo Baptist Church( (PBC) celebrated its 122nd foundation day under the theme "To God be the glory Forever and Ever" at Ukhrul, today.
PBC was founded by Rev William Pettigrew, a US missionary in 1901 .
Earlier in the morning service, 20 youth were baptized at Ngayira, Awungtang by Associate Pastor Qr Mathew Maung.
Phungyo Baptist Church, Hunphun/Ukhrul is the first Christian Church to be established in Manipur.
"Phungyo'', a term derived from "Beautiful Hill" was given by Rev William Pettigrew, after elders from Hunphun village told the Reverend that a beautiful hill top/mount or hill is known as Phungyo in Hunphun/Tangkhul dialect.
On this day in September 1901, 12 Tangkhul men were converted to Christianity by Rev William Pettigrew.
The birth of Christianity among the Tangkhuls is therefore associated with this conversion at Ngayira Rakhong (Ngayira Spring Pond), situated at Awungtang, Ukhrul.
After the baptism service, the main programme and a flag hoisting ceremony was held at PBC where a centenarian Pastor of PBC Rev Champhang Jajo hoisted the Church flag in front of all the congregation with a blessing prayer.
The Church foundation day and its history was briefed by Rev Zaklei Kaping, Pastor of PBC and exhorted by Rev Dr Mathotmi Vasha while Rev Aping Khamrang, Pastor of SBC cum president of TBCA was the main speaker of the programme.
Among others, the foundation day was participated by TNL, TSL, TNWL, TMNL, HKL, HSL Catechist, Hunphun Philava (Queen of Ukhrul) and all the denomination leaders, Pastors and Reverends.
