Chandel observes Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day-2022 was observed at Anallon Christian Institute, Chandel on Thursday by Chandel District Health Society (DHS) and District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) under the theme "Creating hope through Action".
The observance was attended by Dr Serthani Ser-bum, chief medical officer, as chief guest, Dr Joysin Mathew Monsang, medical superintendent District Hospital Chandel, as functional president and L Wolring, principal Anallon Christian Higher Secondary School Chandel, as guest of honour.
The event was attended by 100 students of class XI and XII and teachers of the school.
As part of the observance, a spot quiz programme was held for the students and prizes handed out by the dignitaries.
Delivering the keynote address, DMHP coordinator Dr M Sushilkumar mentioned that 1.64 lack people committed suicide in India in 2021, which was 450 suicides per day, while there were 44-49 suicide cases in Manipur in the same year.
As a resource person of the observance, DMHP nodal officer Dr Kh Robindro, said that for every suicide there are likely 20 suicide attempts and many more seriously think about taking the extreme step.
He also talked about mental health issues which may lead to suicide, and alcohol and substance abuse also one of the major factors of suicide.
Dr Serthani Serbum, chief medical officer, opined that students should be the ambassadors for creating awareness on prevention of suicide in the community, She also stressed the need to identify those suffering from mental illness in the community and to send them to hospital so as to prevent suicide.
Dr Joysin Mathew Monsang, medical Superintendent District Hospital Chandel, exhorted that "God does not want us to commit suicide.
Being a Christian we should not commit suicide, and let other also not commit suicide" .
