Imphal, February 22 2012:
The All Zeliangrong Students' Union (AMN) and Zeliangrong Youth Front (AMN) strongly decried the alleged coarse behaviour of one Major Avinash of 13 Assam Rifles posted at Khongsang who allegedly harassed student and youth leaders on February 21 at Nungba Headquarters.
A joint statement issued by the AZSU and ZYF pointed out that Major Avinash of 13 AR intruded into the Nungba Community Hall yesterday while a joint meeting of the representatives of Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur, village chairmen and representatives of youth was in progress.
The AR Major intruded inside the meeting hall with an intention to disrupt the meeting and created disturbances to the meeting, the joint statement alleged.
Not only trying to have video coverage of the proceeding and demanding the members to submit a copy of the resolutions to him, the AR officer also asked why such meeting was convened within areas that is under his jurisdiction without obtaining prior permission from him, the statement alleged.
After an altercation, he left the hall only to wait outside till the meeting was over.
When the members came out, he detained them and instructed his men to frisk the vehicles of the leaders, the
statement said.
The statement also accused the AR officer of trying to obtain signatures of the members on blank paper.
Asserting that the act of the AR man amounts to harassment and violation of Article 19, the AZSU and ZYF demanded the authority concerned to take exemplary punitive action against the 'irresponsible' AR officer.
Stating that such an unbecoming act has exposed lack of discipline and proper instruction from higher authority, it further urged the higher authority to avoid the recurrence of such acts in future.
