Taking part at the press conference, Transport Principal Secretary Ram Muivah said that the decision of introduction of bus service was taken in a meeting of Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) held today.
The decision was taken taking into account the grievances of shopkeepers that the new regulations have adversely affected business after the two market areas were declared as pedestrian zones on a trial basis from February 13 last, he added.
The meeting was also attended by Transport Minister and shopkeepers, he added.
Ram Muivah further said that Transport Department is planning to increase number of buses if the trial shows positive response from the general public.
Regarding traffic congestion, Ram Muivah said, deliberations are being made by the State Government to use the basement floors of three Ima markets as parking lots.
Detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of a multi-level parking lot has been prepared by a Guwahati based company, he said.
Informing that the company is also ready to deposit fund for the construction of the parking lot on PPP model, Ram Muivah added, it could not be finalised due to election code of conduct.
