High Court to be shifted to new complex

A meeting of the Judiciary and other top leaders of the State government which was held yesterday resolved to shift the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench from its present location to the newly inaugurated High Court Complex at Chingmeirong.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Chief Minister O Ibobi, Law Minister Th Devendra, Works Minister K Ranjit and Tayenjam Nandakumar, Justice, Gauhati High Court.
The meeting instructed the PWD to finish the construction of the Court Complex at Chingmeirong by March 15 so as to enable the shifting of the Gauhati High Court on March 16 .
Sources revealed that although there is no official announcement from the Central Government for the establishment of a separate High Court in the state, it has been agreed in principle that an announcement would be made in this regard once completion of the construction work on the High Court complex.
At present, the construction of the residential Bungalow for the Chief Justice is underway in full swing.
Since the the construction work on the Bungalow is not going to be completed before shifting of the High Court, the State Government has decided to make the Bungalow of the Speaker of Manipur as the Bungalow of the Chief Justice for the time being.
The Speaker of Manipur, in the next term will be staying in the Bungalow at Capitol Project as the construction has completed.
Moreover, the present Assembly Complex would be given to the Imphal Municipal Council.
It is said that after IMC has been shifted to the Assembly complex, the present IMC complex would be made parking area and Indira Park would also be extended.
The land of the present Tombisana High School will also be taken for the purpose and there will also be a multi storied building constructed for parking purpose.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the Chief Justice of Supreme Court and other Justices would be coming to Imphal on April 7 to study the possibility of instituting a separate High Court for the State.
The Court Complex at Chingmeirong has five benches in addition to a separate Bench for the Chief Justice and another three Judges.
There are also separate offices for the BAR Association and
Court Registrar.
