Imphal, February 22 2012:
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) destroyed 5696 kilograms of ganja worth over Rs 150 crores in the international market at Keithelmanbi in Senapati district today.
The contraband item was burnt in the presence of a high level Government drug disposal committee including its Chairman RK Sahu , who is the Bureau's Deputy Director General (Eastern region) .
Manipur's ganja is highly sought in the international market due to its superior quality, analysts said.
Other members of the committee who attended the ganja bonfire included Subroto Biswas (NCB Zonal Director, Guwahati), Sh Amirlal Sharma (SP, Narcotics and Affairs of Border, Manipur) , Vijay Shahasane ( NCB Regional Director, Imphal) and Deputy Commissioner of Customs .
This came barely a fortnight after the Bureau destroyed 3193 kilograms of ganja in Imphal East.

"Today's disposal followed different rulings on three different cases pertaining to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act passed by the designated Court," said an NCB official.
While some of the accused persons involved in smuggling the ganja are currently lodged in jail, others have been released on bail, he said adding that many cases under NDPS Act are pending in the designated Court.
"Since we don't have enough manpower to seize the contraband item in far flung areas, we normally inform the location of its concealment to the security forces which subsequently confiscate and hand over the same to us," he said.
The Bureau might hold another pre-trial disposal of ganja next month, the NCB official said, while urging the people to cooperate with the Bureau's ongoing campaign against drug menace in the State.
Plantation of ganja has now been replaced gradually with poppy cultivation as the latter brings in more profits, analysts added.
Besides NCB, various Government agencies as well as civil anti-drug bodies are on a war path against drug menace in the State.
