Imphal, August 13, 2012:
At least two people have been killed while many others sustained injuries when a group of people going on a pilgrimage met with a road mishap at an isolated place near Uchiwa Mayai Leikai along Mayai Lambi in Imphal West district last morning.
A mini-bus in which the pilgrims were travelling veered off the road and fell into a fish farm while trying to give space to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction at about 9.45 am, said a police source.
The ill-fated mini-bus was carrying pilgrims from Uripok to Wangoo Tampha Lairembi and other sacred sites.
While trying to give space to a vehicle from the opposite direction, both front and real wheels of the left side fell into a roadside excavation made for laying telephone cables.
This unbalanced the vehicle and the driver lost its control.
In the next moment, the vehicle rolled into a nearby fish farm.
Maisnam Ekashini (60) of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai who sustained injuries died at RIMS last morning.
One Maibam Monika alias Bebe (27) of Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai too succumbed to injuries at RIMS this morning.
It is reported that around 20 people sustained injuries on account of the mishap.
They are being treated at RIMS and Shija Hospital.
Those who sustained minor injuries were discharged after giving first aid at Mayang Imphal health centre.
A case has been registered at Mayang Imphal police station in connection with the mishap, informed the source.
