Recognising M Okendro, the owner of giant Samballei Sekpil and his effort in ensuring entry of the plant in the Guinness Book of World Records, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today presented a bank cheque of Rs 5 lakhs to him.
The bank cheque was handed over to Okendro during a solemn function at the conference hall of the Chief Minister's Secretariat.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh said that the monetary reward to Okendro is being presented by the Government of Manipur in recognition of his efforts in grooming the Samballei Sekpil to find a place in the Guinness Book of World Records and bringing pride not only to Manipur but to India.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that many more dedicated Manipuris like Okendro would come up and contribute their mite in various fields.
Tourism Minister TN Haokip, who was also present at the occasion, expressed desire for development of the Samballei Sekpil as a tourist spot.

A hand pump has also been installed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 lakhs to solve the problem of water in grooming the Samballei Sekpil.
MLA of Sagolband Assembly Constituency and PDA Chairman Dr Loken expressed happiness over the recognition given by the Government to Okendro.
He also assured every possible assistance from his side in further development of Saballei Sekpil.
A resident of Sagolband Sayang, Okendro started nurturing his Samballei Sekpil into a giant plant since 1981 .
In 1999, BBC officially announced inclusion of Samballei Sekpil in the Guinness Book of World Records and in the World Records in 2002.The giant plant is now 61 feet tall.
