SKY Hospital performs triple surgery on 6-yr-old child's heart

For the first time at SKY Hospital, a 6-year-old girl underwent a complex open heart surgery successfully on January 13.According to a press release from SKY Hospital & Research Institute, the patient, daughter of Langkhangen of New Lamka, Churachandpur district was bora not only with one hole in the heart but multiple heart defects.
She had a large heart hole called Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), another 'blocked heart valve' called Pulmonary Stenosis (PS) and third heart defect called Severe Tricuspid Valve Regurgitation/leaking.
Despite the complexity of the multiple birth heart defects, a combined heart team of SKY Hospital and BLK Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi led by Dr Ajay Kaul, Senior Heart Surgeon, HOD & Chairman of BLK Heart Centre and Dr L Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital performed the operation in staged manner.
First, the hole (ASD) was closed by opening the right astrium.
Secondly, the blocked valve (PS) was opened up by a procedure called Valvotomy through right atriotomy followed by a third operation called Valvuloplasty for Tricuspid Heart Valve leaking through a small right ventriculotomy.
The triple surgery took 3 hours and 30 minutes.
She recovered very well and was discharged home on day 8 after the operation.
She will grow up like a normal person, it said.
Dr Shyamkishore stated that the operation charges and hospital charges were provided free of cost under a joint venture of RBSK, National Health Mission, Manipur and SKY Hospital.
He emphasised that the best result of an open heart surgery depends very much on the experience of the lead heart surgeon and the experience and skill of the lead cardiologist providing preoperative and post-operative care of such patients.
SKY Hospital is continuing to provide such free open heart surgery to children below 18 years of age, the release added.
