Steps taken to check drugs, poppy plantations

For coordination and control of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the State, the State Government has reconstituted the Multi Disciplinary Level Coordination Committee, in supersession of the order issued in 2006 .
Chief Secretary RR Rashmi will head the 16 member Committee as the Chairman while Additional Chief Secretary (Home) will be the Vice Chairman.
The members include the DGP, Administrative Secretaries, ADGP/IGP (LO), ADGP/IGP (Intelligence), GOC of 57 Mountain Division, IG Assam Rifles, Commissioner (Excise), all Deputy Commissioners, SPs, SP of NAB, Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Imphal, Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise, Regional Director of NCB, Regional unit, Imphal and Special Secretary (Home) .
The terms of the Committee are to monitor the action taken by enforcing agencies in prevention, control, sale of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, to identify and implement alternative economic activities for diverting the farmers from cultivation of such crops and allocate the task to different departments and to take suitable measures for eradication of drug menace in the State.
Likewise the State Government has also constituted a State Level Monitoring Committee on control of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the State with the Additional CS (Home) as Chairman and DGP as Vice Chairman.
The ADGP/IGP to be nominated by the Government will be the convenor while the members include ADGP/IGP (Intelligence), Commissioner (Excise), DCs, SPs, SP of NAB, representative of IGAR (S), representative of GOC, 57 Mountain Division, DC of Customs, Imphal, Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise, Regional Director of NCB, Regional unit, Imphal and Special Secretary (Home).
The Committee is to identify the areas under cultivation for opium, poppy, cannabis and similar other banned plantation, to prepare Action Plan for destruction of such plantation from time to time, to prevent and control production and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the State and prepare and implement action plan for the purpose, to propose alternative economic activities for diverting the farmers from cultivation of such crops and to monitor the awareness campaign and sensitisation programme in the field.
