Imphal, July 28:
Strongly condemning the killing of Pastor Jamkholet Khongsai and Th Manorama by security personnel, the State unit of the Nationalist Congress Party has also jumped into the fray to demand the revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
A decision to this effect was taken during a State level Executive Committee meeting of the party today.
Speaking to newsmen today at the Babupara office of the party, State unit president V Hangkhanlian said that though the AFSPA was imposed in the State more than 20 years back, it has not been able to contain the law and order situation and on the contrary it has only added to the burden of the people.
As the Act has been rendered redundant, it makes no sense to continue with its imposition, he observed.
Stating that the NCP is with the struggle and demand of the people, Hangkhanlian said that all its members have been mobilized and galvanized to take part in the movements launched by the people.
Preparations are underway to draft a message to the party's high command to support any motion to lift the said Act, if it is tabled in Parliament, said Hangkhanlian.
For this very purpose former NCP MP, Holkhomang Haokip is currently at New Delhi, he informed.
To stop the atrocities committed against women, the attention of the National Commission for Women will be drawn to set up such a Commission in Manipur too, said Hangkhanlian.
