Imphal, February 23 2012:
Construction work for Multi Storage OPD Complex, and Hostel for Internee, PG and Nursing Students at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has commenced from today.
A ceremonial ritual was performed at RIMS campus today in connection with the project which was attended by the Director of RIMS, Prof S Shekharjit.
The construction work for the building project would be managed by Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation (HSCC) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Addressing reporters, Prof S Shekharjit said the existing OPD building of the Hospital was constructed 40 years back.
As the hospital caters the medical needs of people from various places of the State as well as patients from outside the state, it could no longer accommodate all the patients.
Even as the then Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr A Ramadoss had laid the foundation for the construction of a three-storeyed Multi storage OPD Complex here in 2008, the construction work could not commence owing to several problems like delay in drawing sanctions, he said.
He further said that RIMS also faced a problem in providing accommodation to many medical students who come every year to pursue their studies.
Construction of a hostel building to accommodate 250 PG students, 200 Nursing students, 50 internees and 120 under-graduate students has also commenced from today, he said.
