Imphal, January 22, 2011:
Joining their comrades in arms, several North East insurgent groups have decided to boycott the upcoming Republic Day celebrations in addition to calling a general strike from 1 am to 5.30 pm of January 26. This was informed through a joint press release issued by the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT), Tripura People's Democratic Front (TPDF) and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
India's Republic Day which is celebrated on January 26 every year is the day Indian constitution was imposed on the peoples of the North East region so as to legalise occupation of the region.
The Indian regime while trying to suppress the legitimate right of the people, the right to national self determination, has degraded the lives of the people by trampling even the basic human right, right to life under the boots of security forces.
For the past 61 years since its imposition, the alien constitution instead of safeguarding lives of the people, has created every sort of problems to undermine the basic unity of the region by fragmenting the region on ethnic lines as a part of their divide and rule' policy, the release alleged.
The insurgent groups said that the Indian military campaign to suppress their legitimate liberation struggles can never succeed although a few of their leaders were captured from within the region and abroad.
"We will fight to the last to regain our legitimate sovereignty and independence", they asserted.
As a symbolic rejection of India's constitution, the people of the region have been boycotting the Republic Day for the last many years, claimed the outfits.
They further informed that the general strike shall cover all forms of transportation, movement of all kinds of vehicles, all forms of entertainments including cinema and theatre shows and all activities of trade and commerce.
However, the media, medical services and religious functions would be exempted from the purview of the general strike.
They went on say that the future of the region is doomed under the alien rule.
"We have to fight the alien rule to regain our sovereignty and independence so that we can survive and exist with dignity as a distinct people" , they added.
