Imphal, December 11 2011:
A one-day sensitisation programme on violence against women and children was held today at INA Hall, Moirang.
Addressing the programme, Dr Chinglen Maisnam of Manipur University, quoting 2011 census report, said that 66 girls die before they are six years old.
High mortality of girls is one major factor for the difference in sex ratio in the State.
The main cause for such high mortality of girls is parents' preference of boys over girls and denying nutritious food and medical care to girl children, said Chinglen.
Bishnupur district remains most backward among the four valley districts.
Whereas 18,000 educated women of Bishnupur district remain unemployed, the rate of domestic crime against women and children has been rising proportionate to the degree of financial insecurity of a family.
Rate of violence against women and children would rise in insecurity of a family.
Rate of violence against women and children would rise in tune to the increasing number of poverty stricken families, said Dr Chinglen.Speaking at the programme which was organised as a part of the fortnight observance on Crime Against Women and Children together with a musical concert, secretary of the WAD Subita Mangshatabam said that rape cases have multiplied manifold because of extensive use of mobile phones.
More than 200 cases on rape in restaurants and transfer of nude pictures through bluetooth have been recorded, she said.
Whereas wide-scale moral degradation among girls and boys has been noticed, the impacts of such moral degradation are felt more among girls, she added.
