Imphal, April 09 2021:
Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) opened the first 'Transgender Women Grievance Redressal Cell' of Manipur at its office premises today.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prof Meinam Binota, chairperson, MSCW; Ng Uttam Singh, Director, Social Welfare Department; Thangjam Shanta, co-ordinator of Transgender Women Cell, MSCW and Bonita Pebam, Transgender Rights Activist.
In a statement issued today Prof Meinam Binota said that the cell was opened to provide a platform to transgender women to address their problems, issues and challenges faced by them in the society.
She added that earlier they were unrecognised and their voices were unheard by the society.
However, recently the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India had notified the protection of rights of Transgender community.
With this recognition, MSCW strongly felt and voiced for constituting a platform for Transgender community especially women and it was realised today with the opening of the grievance cell, she added.
She said that presently the grievance cell is opened only for transgender women on a trial basis as the commission felt that transgender women were facing more harassment in every social situation than transgender man.
The opening of the Transgender Women Grievance Redressal Cell will serve as a step forward in bringing gender equality where every diverse nature of life can exercise and enjoy equal rights and opportunities in the society, added the statement.
