Imphal, February 17 2012:
Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has cautioned the general public that due care must be taken in purchasing smoked fish from local markets, especially in areas close to Phoubakchao and eastern side of Loktak lake.
Certain fishermen were found using Hildan insecticide in fishing in Loktak lake, particularly at Maibam Phumlak area, near Phoubakchao, said a press release issued by LDA Project Director Th Ibobi Singh.
The method is very detrimental and hazardous to health, it added.
The press release further said that an LDA team has verified high level water contamination and large scale death of fishes in these areas.
