Imphal, May 16 2019: Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has stated that the State Government has been making serious efforts to improve primary healthcare system in the State.

She was speaking at the International Nurses' Day Celebration, 2019 held at Jubilee Hall, RIMS today under the aegis of the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) and Student Nurses Association of India, Manipur State Branch on the theme 'Nurses: A Voice to Lead - Health for All'.

The Governor stated that it is imperative for all citizens to remain healthy and the nurses play an important role in providing robust healthcare services.

She said that the theme of the celebration truly reflects the intrinsic character of the service rendered by the nurses.

Florence Nightingale was the embodiment of selfless service and sacrifice and her picture with a lamp was the hope for the sick and wounded and she was fondly known as 'the lady with the lamp', she added.

The Governor said that the celebration is a reminder of the important role of nurses who are the backbone of the healthcare system.

She further stated that the Trained Nurses Association of India, established in 1908 and recognised by the Government of India as a service organisation since 1950, is indicative of the importance of this profession to the development of the country.

There are thousands of nurses currently practising in this country, a massive resource, which the Government intends to safeguard and strengthen, Dr Najma said.

It is a matter of pride that nurses of Manipur are in high demand for their gentle behaviour and are increasingly sought in other States and abroad, she added.

Vumlunmang Vualnam, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare said that there are 40 Health and Wellness Centres and there is a plan to open 100 more in the coming years in the State.

The Government of India has taken up the initiative of Health and Wellness Centre under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme giving top priority to healthcare.

He reminded the gathering that GNM nurses have a key role in making the Health and Wellness Centres active and successful.

The Governor unveiled the logo of the Trained Nurses' Association of India, Manipur State Branch as part of the celebration.

Recipient of TNAI Lifetime Achievement Award, 2018, Laishram Ibohal Singh, Registered Male Nurse, was also felicitated for his contribution in establishing Manipur Nursing Council and full fledged College of Nursing in RIMS.

Certificates were also distributed to the students who took part in the quiz competition held as a part of the weeklong celebration.

Dr K Rajo Singh, Director (Health & Family Welfare), Prof L Jaichand Singh, Head of Department, Radiotherapy, RIMS and N Tangbi Devi, president, TNAI, Manipur State Branch also attended the function.

Staff and students of Government and Private Nursing Colleges of the State took part in the celebration.
