A one-day community meeting on drug abuse prevention programme was held at Keishampat Yumjao Lairembi ground here today.
Sponsored by Committee for Drug Abuse Prevention (CODAP), Manipur, the meeting was organised by Social Centre for Recovery Initiative and Advancement (SCRIA), Imphal West.
MLA of Keishamthong A/C L Ibomcha Singh and CODAP convenor L Krishnamohan were chief guest and president of the function which was also attended by former Director of Art and Culture Thiyam Subol Singh and advisor of Apunba Nupi Lup, Keishamthong Th Dhaneshwori Devi as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, MLA Ibomcha said Meira Paibis should take more pro-active role in prevention of drug abuse among the people of the State.
He alleged that the Government its and law enforcing agencies are not carrying out their duties sincerely and with dedication toward prevention of abusing banned pharmaceutical substances in the State.
Giving the key note address, co-convenor of Awakening SHG N Bobo Meitei said that he has been able to give up the habit of drugs after taking part in the Drug De-Addiction camp organised by CODAP at Moirangpokpi recently.
He also exhorted the youths who are in the habit of abusing drugs to give up the habit.
Giving his testimonial, Bobo informed that he started smoking while studying in class VIII due to the peer pressure and by class X he got into the habit of taking drugs and other intoxicants, for which he sometime lied to his parents for getting money on one pretext or the other.
Secretary of Keishamthong Meira Paibi Thangjam Sakhitombi expressed serious concern over the problem of drug abuse which has been spreading far and wide among the youths and mooted that the Government should bear the expenses in rehabilitating the addicts.
