Imphal, December 24 2019:
Police arrested and put a man behind bars after he reportedly poured kerosene on his wife and set her on fire.
According to a source, the incident occurred at Mayang Imphal Kokchai Leikai, under Mayang Imphal P/S, yesterday evening.
The accused, identified as one Thangjam Umakanta (35) s/o Ibopishak, was picked up by police today and taken into custody of Mayang Imphal PS in connection with the incident.
The source informed that Umakanta allegedly thrashed his wife, Longjam (N) Thangjam (O) Puja (26) before pouring kerosene on her and setting her on fire.
Puja is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS after suffering burns on around 20 percent of her body including her face, hands, neck and belly, as well as for various blunt trauma injuries to her body from the beatings by her husband.
On the other hand, Puja's maternal family claimed that Puja came to their home at Wangoi Longjam Leikai yesterday afternoon with her daughter, after an appointment at a dental clinic in the area.
Puja stayed for just a while before heading back to her husband's home but when she reached Mayang Imphal Kokchai Makha Leikai, her husband Umakanta, began beating her for returning home late and for not letting his mother accompany her.
Puja's parents then alleged that Umakanta picked up a kerosene lantern which was nearby and poured the oil onto Puja before picking up a candle (which was lit at the home as there was no electricity at the time) and setting her one fire.
Appalled at such actions, they further demanded Umakanta to be punished severely for his heinous act as per the law.
