Imphal, April 04 2012:
The two-day state level workshop on 'domestic workers' welfare and social security Act and Suggested Measures' in Manipur organised by Manipur women Coordinating Council, Canchipur under the sponsorship of National Commission for Women concluded at Manipur Press Club today.
The valedictory function was attended by Manipur State Women Commission Chairperson Dr L Ibetombi Devi, president of the host Council A Bimola Devi and Manipur State Social Welfare Board Chairperson RK Nayansana Devi as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
In her address, Dr Ibetombi conceded that inspite of a legislation prohibiting underage children from being exploited or engaged as domestic workers, in Manipur such a law is irrelevant as many children still work in unfriendly conditions.
While noting that underage children are being employed in hotels or engaged as domestic workers, the Commission Chairperson emphasised that protection of children belonging to economically unsound families could be ensured only when there is awareness among the adult members of the society on the rights of the children.
Commenting on the workshop theme, functional president A Bimola expressed confidence that scale of engaging underage domestic workers and associated problems could be minimised if more awareness campaigns are organised throughout the State.
Among others Nupi Samaj president K Taruni also attended the workshop which culminated with a deliberation on 'Machineries under the Domestic Welfare and Social Security Act 2012' by Manipur State Women commission's member Secretary S Meghachandra Sharma.
The second day session was held under the chairmanship of IPS (Retd) M Sushilkumar Singh.
