Imphal, May 21 2021:
Six student bodies of the state namely, AMSU, MSF, KSA, SUK, AIMS and DESAM have sent a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind urging for appointment of a regular vice chancellor for Manipur University.
Copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to MU chief rector Governor Dr Najma Heptulla, chief minister N Biren, Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and MU chancellor.
In the joint memorandum, the student bodies mentioned that MU was opened by an Act of State Legislature in 1980 and it became a central university by a Parliamentary Act on October 13, 2005.In February 2020, the then MU VC was removed from the post and an advertisement issued for appointment of a regular VC in March 2020.MU has been under the control of an administrator appointed by the court in November 2018 who was later discharged by the Manipur High Court on November 30, 2020.Since, December 10, 2020 a VC in-charge has been administrating the varsity and after his retirement on February 1 this year, the present VC in-charge has been carrying out the duties, it noted.
The student organisations pointed out that they have information about an interaction programme conducted for candidates short listed for the post of VC on August 19-20, 2020 by Union Ministry of Education and the selection committee has also sent the list of candidates to the Ministry.
But till now no information has been provided by the Ministry on why the appointment has not yet been finalised.
Due to non-appointment of a regular VC, many matters have remained pending in the MU such as appointment of regular teaching and non-teaching staff, buying of laboratory equipment and books for library along with providing various facilities in the hostels.
On top of this, the University Court has not met since 2015 due to absence of a regular VC.
Hence, it is utmost important that a regular VC is appointed for MU at the earliest, demanded the student bodies.
