MHRC seeks ATR on Meetei Mayek implementation

The Manipur Human Rights Commission has asked the Chief Secretary to submit 'action taken report' regarding implementation of Meitei Mayek replacing Bengali script on or before July 1.The instructions of the MHRC came after the Meitei Leimarol Art Performing Centre, Wangkhei filed a petition regarding implementation of Meitei Mayek replacing the use of the Bengali script in the State.
The complainants prayed "for the enforcement of the right to life with liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship in Meitei Mayek (Manipuri Language), as guaranteed under Articles 21 read with Articles 19(1)(a), 25, 26 and 29 of the Constitution of India" .
The complainants further prayed for recommendation for the repeal/amendment of the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 in order to fully implement the use of Meitei Mayek for all official communications/advertisements/news, for all educational institutions as the written medium of instructions, for all sorts of written communications, etc.
They also prayed for the implementation of Report of Meitei Mayek Expert Sub Committee and to take appropriate steps for the inclusion of Manipuri language written in Meitei Mayek in the denomination of notes issued by the RBI.
Responding to the complaint, Manipur Human Rights Commission has asked the Chief Secretary to submit 'action taken report' on or before July 1 .
The complaint was filed by RK Netasana Leima and Sangubam Pramo Devi representing Meitei Leimarol Art Performing Centre.
