New Delhi, December 18 2013:
Seeking to the clear the air over the lead news story which appeared in the December 18 edition of this paper, Joint Secretary in the Union Home Ministry and in charge of North East, Shambhu Singh, today informed this correspondent that the said construction work is a road construction and not border fencing, as reported.
Shambhu Singh also re-affirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs has already issued necessary instructions to suspend the border fencing work until a joint survey is conducted by a joint team from India and Myanmar.
After his visit to the Indo-Myanmar border on December 7 and 8, along with officials of Border Management, Mr Singh observed the need for a review of the boundary line and had stated that the matter will also be brought up at the diplomatic level, if required, with Myanmar Government.
When The Sangai Express contacted a high ranking and responsible officer, associated with the border fencing work, he replied that road construction along the border and border fencing are the same thing, as it is a demarcation between the two countries.
Meanwhile a source informed The Sangai Express that the stories carried in the December 17 and 18 editions have been brought to the notice of the Chief Minister.
