Street vendors try to storm Assembly

Street vendors, mostly women from Khwairamband bazaar demanding implementation of National Urban Street Vendor Policy 2009 today tried to storm the state assembly shortly after it began its first sitting.
A large number of women street vendors from the Imphal main market Khwairamband led by leaders of Khwairamband Keithel Lambi Matai Potpham Phambi Lup were seen trying to take out a protest rally from two sides-eastern gate of DM College and western gate of Thao Ground-and storm the state assembly here at Chingmeirong on the demand of introduction of the latest National Urban Street Vendor Policy 2013 in the state.
Police faced a skirmish while controlling the crowd which they managed to calm down and foiled the attempt.
The women demonstrators held placards that read "Act according to the Supreme Court ruling," "Street vendors are also people, don't treat us like animals," "We feed our children" and "Give us place to sell" .
