Centre sanctions Sericulture Phase-II

Taking due cognizance of the fact that Manipuri kings and queens had a long tradition of silk clothes starting from the legends of Khamba and Thoibi, the Government of India has given its approval for the Manipur Sericulture Project Phase-II.
The Project Approval and Monitoring Committee of the Ministry of Textiles held a meeting at New Delhi today with its Secretary Joy Chatterjee in the chair.
It is reported that the committee sanctioned the Manipur Sericulture Project Phase-II after acknowledging that Manipur has a long tradition of rearing silk worms and weaving silk clothes since ancient period.
Principal Secretary (Sericulture) O Nabakishore was also present at the meeting as a representative of the State Government.
Manipur Sericulture Project Phase-II aims at planting mulberry trees over 10,000 hectares and its production target is 200 metric tonnes of silk yarn.
Notably, Japan International Cooperation Agency, citing law and order problems of the State, declined to invest for the Manipur Sericulture Project Phase-II.
