Imphal, November 10 2016:
A girl who jumped into a river to rescue a young mother who was struggling to rescue her daughter had sunk and disappeared after rescuing the mother and the daughter.
Loukrakpam (O) Kebisana, her three year old daughter and her niece Rajeshwari (14) were crossing a wooden bridge built over Imphal river at Arong Mayai Leikai.
The wooden bridge was worn out and its wooden planks had holes.
As Kebisana's daughter stumbled and fell into the river through a hole, the mother jumped into the river to rescue her daughter but she was struggling in the river as she did not know how to swim.
On seeing the desperate situation, Rajeshwari jumped into the river and brought both the mother and the daughter to the water surface.
Some other people who were present there too jumped into the river and took the mother-daughter duo to the river bank but when they looked out for Rajeshwari, they could not see her.
Even though they searched for Rajeshwari for some more time, they could not locate her.
Rajeshwari is the only daughter among three siblings born to her parents.
Anguished by the tragic incident, local people set ablaze the bridge in the evening.
They maintained they approached former Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar repeatedly to repair the bridge but to no avail.
They said that two other people fell and drowned in the river while crossing the bridge earlier in the past.
