Imphal, October 10 2013 :
An Assistant Professor of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Centre Manipur was reportedly assaulted by the Director of Academic Staff College, Manipur University today.
Meanwhile, MSF has demanded MU authority to conduct an impartial enquiry into the incident.
According to a press release issued by IGNTU, RCM Assistant Professor Dr Hanjabam Shukhdeba, he was physically assaulted by ASC Director Prof Moirangthem Mani without any provocation even as orientation class was going on at the Academic Staff College.
Earlier, there was some exchange of words between O'Brien, Course Coordinator of the 19th Orientation Course and Dr Sukhdeba on unavailability of certain facilities for power point presentation.
While questioning the credibility and eligibility of O'Brien as the course coordinator, Dr Sukhdeba lambasted the alleged violent nature of Prof Moirangthem Mani.
The incident is an embarrassment to Manipur University as a whole, Dr Sukhdeba added.
Talking about the incident, MSF general secretary RN Koireng said that MU authority should investigate the incident and take up appropriate actions.
He alleged that Prof Mani is an unfit person.
Condemning in the strongest term the act of physically assaulting a teacher, Koireng said that the ugly incident resulted from power supply failure during the orientation programme which started since September 20 .
Saying that generator sets have bee purchased for each and every department of MU, RN Koireng appealed to MU authority to distribute the generator sets to departments instead of letting them rust in some corner.
He further urged authorities concerned to suspend the ongoing orientation programme until a solution is achieved.
