64th Territorial Army Day observed

Manipur Government today celebrated the 64th Territorial Army Day 2013 at the 1st Manipur Rifles Banquet Hall here.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and his Deputy Gaikhangam shared the dais at the impressive function marking the day.
Territorial Army was set up on this day, October 10, 1949 .
In his speech, the Chief Minister hailed the role of Manipur Terriers, the only Territorial Army unit of the state.
He said the Manipur Terriers was raised from its own soil, and that this unit has immensely helped the youths and given protection to all the fellow citizens, apart from assisting the regular Army.
"Now, the Manipur unit of the Territorial Army has become an inseparable part of the security forces," the Chief Minister said.
After India got independence in 1947, the need of more security forces increased rapidly and considering it the Territorial Army was established after a formal inauguration by the Governor General of India, C Gopalachari, he mentioned.
Col K Bishwas, CO, 165th Bn of Territorial Army, personnel of the battalion and their families were also present at the occasion.
