Imphal, May 25 2022:
Cattle farmers registered under different dairy societies stormed the office of the managing director of Manipur Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited (MMPCUL) and veterinary and animal husbandry director Dr NG Ibotombi and tried to lock down the office.
The farmers were expressing their dis-satisfaction over inactivity of the MD, who allegedly leaves no room to hear the grievances of the cattle farmers.
A brief tussle also ensued as police tried to stop them from locking the office.
Earlier, a meeting was held at the Union's office complex at Porompat to discuss the issues being faced by the cattle farmers.
Union chairman Ch Ramananda, members of the board of directors and representatives of farmers' cooperative societies attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the cattle farmers brought up the demand for hiking the procurement price of milk as they are unable to derive proper profit from the current price rate considering the higher cost of feeds and routine vaccinations.
They also expressed dissatisfaction over not getting any room to bring up the matter to the MD of the union, who according to them did not pay a single visit to the union's office in the last four years.
They also demanded release of the pending payment for procuring milk from the farmers.
The farmers then tried to lock down the office of the MD but as Porompat PS team barred their entry in a brief tussle ensued between the farmers and the police.
Interacting with the media, IVR Milk Cooperative Society, Nachou secretary Nongmaithem Dhanabir said that they have raised demand for revising the procurement rate of milk on numerous occasions but the union is doing nothing.
They tried to meet the MD to bring up the matter but they were given no chance to meet him, he said, while alleging the MD of completely ignoring the union.
He demanded the union to revise the procurement price of milk to Rs 50.14 per litre by May 30 .
