Imphal, June 28 2021:
Khangabok Development and Students' Union (KDASU) has called for termination of Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Dr Binota Meinam from her position, accusing her of misusing powers.
In a press release, KDASU strongly condemned alleged "misuse of power by Dr Binota Meinam beyond the functions of Manipur State Commission for Women" and contended that there were several instances in December 2019 where hundreds of youths demanded her termination from the post of chairperson (MSCW) over her statement on morality of women that hurt the sentiment of many youths.
"Moreover, we have also noted from media reports that Dr Binota Meinam has misused the power of chairperson by forcing one woman to sign a 'Deed of Divorce' with a threat on November 26, 2019," it said.
The maintained that the deliberate misuse of power by Dr Binota came to light when the High Court of Manipur suspended the proceedings of case no.42 of 2021 of MSCW.
It then expressed fear that natural justice could not be served to the female victim if she (MSWC chairperson) continues to hold her position, charging that the chairperson "has been working with vested interests with one women's organisation which acts as a law court that they even made the conflicting parties sign 'agreement of separation' which was against the rule of law" .
KDASU then urged the chief minister and the governor of Manipur to terminate Binota Meinam from the post of chairperson MSCW at the earliest in the best interest of the women as per the provisions laid down under the Manipur State Commission for Women Act, 2006 .
