VCI president assures support to setting up Vety college

Imphal, October 05 2022: Veterinary Council of India (VCI) president Dr Umesh Chandra Sharma has assured all possible support in setting up a veterinary college in the state.

He was speaking during a felicitation function organised in his honour by Manipur State Veterinary Council and Directorate of veterinary and animal husbandry services at the farmers' training hall located within Veterinary Complex, near Sanjenthong, here, on Wednesday.

Dr Umesh Chandra recounted how the country became a global leader in milk production, and said that veterinarians played a major role in boosting milk production that consequently brought a paradigm shift on the outlook people had about veterinarians.

The PM Modi government understands the importance of animal husbandry and set up a separate ministry to accelerate development in the sector, he said while stressing the need for the government of Manipur to develop infrastructure in this sector to boost production and farmers' income.

Assuring all possible assistance from the side of Veterinary Council of India to wards improving the sector in the state, the VCI president advised the state veterinary council to send suggestions and recommendations as and when required so that the national council could pursue the same with the ministry.

He also assured of support in setting up a veterinary college in the state.

Veterinary & animal husbandry services director Dr Ng Ibotombi said that there are 540 practitioners registered under Manipur State Veterinary Council and many new practitioners are also about to get registered soon.

He, however, lamented over not having a single veterinary college in the state though it has four medical colleges.

Emphasising on the importance and benefits of having a veterinary college, especially in the field of conducting researches on indigenous breeds, he drew attention of VCI for approving a veterinary college in the state.

Retired directors of veter inary and animal husbandry services Dr H Chaoba & Dr J Joykumar, VCI secretary Vinod Bhatt, and veterinary and animal husbandry services secretary Michael Achom also attended the programme.

Later, a meeting of registrars of veterinary councils of northeast states was facilitated.
