Imphal, December 29 2017:
Ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that it would not take long to rename Imphal Air-port as Bir Tikendrajit Airport if the State Assembly adopts a resolution towards this effect.
Ibobi was speaking at the 161st birth anniversary function of Bir Tikendrajit held today at Congress Bhavan here under the aegis of MPCC.
The gathering led by O Ibobi and MPCC president TN Haokip offered floral tributes to Bir Tikendrajit.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the function, Ibobi said that the previous Congress Government sent a proposal to the Centre to re-name Imphal airport after Bir Tikendrajit.
Even though the Centre was willing to accept the proposal, they asked the State Government to adopt a resolution at the State Assembly and send it to the Government of India so that the same proposal can be translated into action within a shorter period, Ibobi said.
Bir Tikendrajit was a hero of Manipur.
Even though he knew that Manipur had no chances of winning a war against the British empire, Bir Tikendrajit refused to surrender and boldly resisted British colonial expansion in Manipur, Ibobi said.
Tikendrajit is a national hero of Manipur and the people will never forget him, Ibobi added.
