Kangpokpi, June 13 2026:
Hundreds of Kuki-Zo community on Saturday gathered at the Martyrs' Cemetery in Phaijang on Saturday to bid a final farewell to Haogin Lhouvum, a resident of Lasan who was killed in the June 9 attack, even as fresh violence in the conflict-hit region claimed the life of another Kuki-Zo village volunteer and injured two others.
The funeral was held amid renewed tensions in the conflict-affected area, highlighting the continuing security concerns faced by residents of vulnerable villages.
Hundreds of mourners braved persistent rain and adverse weather conditions to pay their last respects to Lhouvum, whose body had been kept overnight at the Martyrs' Cemetery for a night-long condolence programme attended by family members, community leaders, village representatives and civil society organisations.
The burial service was led by Rev Thangsat Kipgen under the aegis of the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU).
Prominent leaders from Kuki Inpi Manipur, SAHILCA and several Kuki-Zo civil society organisations attended the solemn ceremony.
Following Lhouvum's burial, Kuki civil society organisations in Kangpokpi had initially resolved to lift the district-wide total shutdown imposed in protest against the recent violence.
However, during an emergency meeting, the organisations decided to continue the shutdown until the burial of the village volunteer killed in the latest incident.
