Pandit Loishang members protest

Imphal, October 24 2021:
Condemning the activities being taken up for installing chariots (Kangkhong of Kang) at three sacred sites of Meetei religion located around Manipur Pandit Loishang in Palace Compound along with other structures; Amaiba (priests), Amaibi (priestesses), Pena players and members of Pandit Loishang staged a protest demonstration on Sunday around 1pm and dismantled the structures and set fire on them.
However, large number of Imphal East Police personnel rushed to the scene and took the situation under control, thereby preventing any further destruction.
CAF&PD minister and Govindajee Temple Board vice president Thokchom Satybrata also arrived at the scene and took stock of the situation.
Speaking to newspersons regarding the protest, Pandit Loishang member Nongmaithem Apabi said that the three sacred sites located around the Loishang are important sites for the followers of Meetei religion.
Pandit Loishang had been objecting to installation of the structures in the said areas, even raising the issue to the Chief Minister, who is the president of Govindajee Temple Board.
However, as the installation continued, they were compelled to stage the protest on Sunday.
Apabi demanded for all activities to be halted immediately.
Meanwhile, Imphal East police have detained several members of Pandit Loishang in connection with Sunday's protest.
