The Thoubal District Working Journalists' Union ( TDWJU) has condemned the alleged assault on Thoubal correspondent of Naharolgi Thoudang Elangbam Rameswor by workers of Heirok Block Congress at his own home at Heirok Part-I, Bazar Maning Leikai this morning.
A press release issued by TKWJU stated that beating a journalist at his own home is akin to humiliating the whole of the journalist community.
Saying that TDWJU has resolved to not cover any events of Heirok Block Congress until all the perpetrators are booked, the union urged the Government to do the needful at the earliest.
The TDWJU has also written to the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) to take necessary action against those who assaulted Rameswor.
AMWJU and EGM have also condemned the attack.
In a joint statement, AMWJU and EGM urged all to raise any matter concerning publication of news with the Editor concerned before taking any action on working journalists.
Stating that the attack is an attack on the freedom of expression, AMWJU and EGM urged the authorities concerned to book the culprits at the earliest.
The matter may be brought up to AMWJU and EGM for resolution if the need arises, the statement said and added that AMWJU and EGM would not tolerate any direct action on journalists.
The Kakching District Journalists' Union (KDJU) too condemned the incident.
