A meeting of All Manipur Poultry Farmers and Traders Association which was held at Manipur Press Club today unanimously resolved to set up a Coordinating Committee comprising members of various CSOs to monitor import of chickens from outside the State.
The meeting, which was attended by members of various CSOs, also adopted a number of resolutions.
The resolutions also included urging the State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department to test medical fitness of all live stocks transported into the State and to take up measures to stop chicken centres from selling chickens at the rate of their choice.
The meeting was attended by Heisnam Kulachandra, President of All Manipur Poultry Farmers and Traders Association; Mutum Churamani, President of HERICOUN; Phurailatpam Devan, Vice President of AMUCO; Md Kheirudin Shah, President of All Manipur Muslim Coordinating Committee and MC Kom, Executive Member of Komrem Union, Manipur as presidium members.
Speaking in the meeting, K Achouba, General Secretary of All Manipur Poultry Farmers and Traders Association, pointed out that Manipur has been experiencing fluctuations in the price of chickens of late and the small poultry farmers in the State are facing strong competition from outside as large quantities of chickens are being transported into the State at cheaper rates by big businessmen.
With this trend in progress, the business of the small poultry farmers in the State is on the brink of collapse.
He further stated that the poultry farming business in the State has grown tremendously in the State during the last 10 years.
This is because of the fact that there are no big industries in the State which could provide employment opportunities to educated youths of the State.
However, the interference from big firms from outside the State has started giving a hard time to poultry farmers in the State.
