THE TRANSPORT of goods, including essential commodities, into Assam and the rest of the North-East could be under a cloud with the pan India strike of truckers continuing for the third consecutive day.
Although the effect in Assam and Meghalaya has been partial with some truck owners and associations running their vehicles, the effects could worsen as in rest of the country trucks prefer to put their brakes on, revealed a well-placed source.
The Assam Chamber of Inter State Carriers who is taking part in the nationwide protest stated that nearly 30 per cent of trucks in Assam have come to a standstill.
"We are demanding a Rs 10 reduction per litre of diesel, and lessening duties like excise, besides calling for harassment by government authorities like MVI to stop.
However, there has been no positive response so far from the Union Government," remarked RS Tiwary of the Chamber.
