A 12-year old girl who was coming on a bicycle was killed after being knocked down by a sand-loaded Tata truck along Wangkhei Kongba Road just in front of Thangal Temple of Palace Compound under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East district at around 7.15 am today.
The young victim has been identified as Leihaothabam Pushpa Devi (12) d/o late Tombi Sharma of Wangkhei Angom Leikai.
The incident occurred while Pushpa was going in a bicycle along with one of her friends.
The Tata truck whose registration no.could not be recorded sped off after committing the crime.
Pushpa was immediately rushed to the JN Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Miraculously, her friend did not suffer any injuries.
The bicycle also did not suffer any damage.
Meanwhile, after convening a public meeting in connection with the death of Pushpa in the afternoon today at Wangkhei Angom Leikai United Club, a JAC has been instituted and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The memorandum demanded the Government to find out the owner/driver of the truck responsible for the killing within January 10 and called upon all the truck owners and drivers to extend their co-operation in this regard.
Apart from resolving to stop transportation of sand along Imphal-Yairipok road until the guilty truck owner/driver have been identified and booked, the JAC has also asked the Government to pay compensation to the bereaved family before Shradha ceremony of the departed soul.
To ensure such unwanted incidents do not repeated, the JAC has also urged the Government for providing a parking lot for the local trucks.
