Two saved from drowning, one rescuer dies

One Veronika Ngangom (10) saved a one-and-half year girl from drowning in a pond.
According to Pioneer Education Sporting Union (PSEU) president Thingbai-jam Swarankumar the toddler namely Bhumika Ngangom, daughter of Naoba Ngangom of Oinam Bazar Makha Leikai fell into a pond on August 26 around 4 pm.
On seeing the toddler struggling in the waters, Veronika Ngangom, d/o Gitchandra Ngangom pulled out the toddler.
Bhumika was then rushed to Primary Health Centre for treatment.
Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) mourned the demise of one Machunthuan Riamei of Namthanjang (New Keithelmanbi) who died while saving his friend from drowning on August 29.In a release, ZSUM secretary Katorei-yang Pamei informed that the act of saving his friend to the extent of sacrificing own life is a heroic act and should be acknowledged by all.
It said that Machunthuan was the son of Sadrek Riamei and Roma Riamei and a student of class 10 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (Khumbong).
Narrating about the incident, the release said that the two boys were out for a bath in a local pond but on realising that his friend was in danger, Machunthuan swam and saved him (friend) and in the process lost his life.
The Zeliangrong students' body urged the responsible department to look into the matter and take up necessary acknowledgment for such sacrifices and act of bravery.
