Imphal, September 23 2011:
The Naga Peoples' Union Imphal (NPUI) strongly condemned the inhuman incident which took place at New Checkon on September 16 in which three Naga youths hailing from Chandel district were beaten without any apparent reason by some Kuki youths.
NPUI in a press release today stated that the three victims were an AR jawan and two students who came to appear TET in Imphal.
It further stated that a Kuki SI of Manipur Police Commando who intervened in the incident arrested the two injured Naga youths along with one Kuki youth who was involved in the beating and locked them up at Porompat PS.
He detained the two Naga youths for a night but released the Kuki youth without any action.
In a similar incident on June 16 at the same locality, a Naga ASI Commando was beaten by unknown persons who later succumbed to his injuries in hospitals, it stated.
While condemning the irresponsible act of the SI, NPUI appealed to the people of the state to refrain from such act which might create communal ill feelings and affect the peaceful co-existence.
NPUI also appreciated the fair conduct of SP Imphal East Clay Khongsai in releasing the Naga youths who were detained by the SI .
While demanding booking of the SI commando for his irresponsible act, NPUI appealed to all the ethnic communities living in New Checkon and its surrounding area to maintain peace and communal harmony.
